Under the Denman glacier in East Antarctica, scientists have found the supposedest deepest canyon in the world that is located below a continent, the researchers write in the scientific journal Nature Geoscience. The gap extends at least 3.5 kilometers below sea level.

The lowest visible point on Earth on the edge of the Dead Sea is only 413 meters below sea level, writes BBC News Thursday evening. The deepest known point under an ocean in the Marianentrog reaches almost 11 kilometers deep.

An international team of researchers, including researchers from Utrecht University, has mapped the surface under the ice of Antarctica to better understand the subsurface. In addition, they warn of the consequences of climate change, they write in Nature Geoscience .

For example, several glaciers could disappear with further global warming, as their subsurface slides toward the core of the earth, the researchers said.

The glaciers are found on the map, called BedMachine, which was made with measurements of radar systems that are operated from scientific research aircraft.
