The film Instinct , with which Halina Reijn makes her directorial debut, has been chosen as a Dutch entry for the Oscars.

"This is of course completely unexpected and more than honorable," Reijn and Carice van Houten react. The two co-produced the film with their production company and Van Houten also plays a leading role in Instinct.

"That our first film with a complex, provocative theme is understood and seen by professionals in the field is in itself incredible and that makes us very, very happy."

Instinct was selected from ten applications by a selection committee, which consisted of representatives from various film industry associations.

The film, about a psychologist (Van Houten) who is developing a love affair with a sex offender (Marwan Kenzari) recently premiered during the Locarno Film Festival and can be seen in Dutch cinemas from 3 October.
