Where many Dutch celebrities are sprawling on a beach bed in the coming weeks, there are certainly some well-known names that work hard in the summer. NU.nl calls a few of these stars and asks them: what will you do in the summer months? This time: music duo Suzan & Freek, known from the hit When it is evening .
Why are you working through this summer?
Suzan: "We are at many festivals and are busy writing our debut album, which we want to release this year. That does mean that we have to keep working. That doesn't cost us much effort, because it doesn't feel like work at all. At festivals you often linger longer to see other artists, so we can combine work with relaxation. "
Freek: "Every week it varies how our working life looks. Monday we had an interview on 538, Tuesday we brainstormed all day about the upcoming theater tour that we are going to do in the fall, Wednesday and Thursday we were in the studio and going on Friday we go on a weekend trip with friends to the Ardennes. A good combination like that. "
Is the summer a good time to write music?
Freek: "It is nice to remember that the songs that we write during these summer days will not be released until the autumn. We want to finish it as soon as possible, but that is a bit on our inspiration."
Suzan: "I notice that we come up with ideas faster now that we sit outside more often when the weather is nice, chilling out and being isolated from the world.
Have you worked more often during the holiday / summer period?
Freek: "Previously we both had a 'normal' job, but we canceled it after If the evening was a success. This is the first summer that we both lead full-time artists' lives."
Suzan: "We are now completely in the bubble of making full-time music, we only do what we like and don't have to do anything anymore."
Freek: "Everyone is also relaxed during the summer holidays, I think everything is going at half pace. If the weather is nice, just open a bottle of wine at 3.30 pm."
Have you ever had summer side jobs before?
Freek: "We were both picking strawberries for the entire summer vacation when we were about twelve years old. I also worked in a snack bar for a while."
Suzan: "I always enjoyed working in the summer. It makes a difference that we can now divide our time. If the weather is nice, we can chill on the water in the sloop and chill in the sun."
What are the fun and less fun things about working in the summer?
Freek: "I like the most that you can alternate work with fun things. Not that your days are filled with work, such as in the winter. When you're done, it's dark and your day seems to be over."
Suzan: "Everyone is happier in the summer, is more looking forward to it."
Freek: "It is less fun that you sometimes miss a festival, birthday or other party because you have to play yourself. That is the other side of the coin."
Suzan: "It makes a difference that we are two, so we are not alone."
When do you go on holiday?
Freek: "Next year we will go on a winter sport with the family of Suus."
Suzan: "And we only went to the Ardennes for a weekend. We already blocked that weekend a while ago."
182Suzan & Freek - Blue day
What is your best memory of working in the summer?
Suzan: "I immediately think of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches, that was one of the most beautiful performances we have done."
Freek: "It was then at the beginning of July, the kick-off of the summer, it really felt like a holiday. I also remembered Concert at Sea this year: the weather was super nice and the sky was radiant blue. Coincidentally, our song Blue Day just happened from."
Are you going to continue playing next summer?
Freek: "We play a lot, there are so many festivals. We don't go on vacation in the summer, just before or after. The Netherlands is at its best in the summer, with all those festivals."
Guido Spek, whom we spoke to for this section last time, would like to know what your greatest musical dream is.
"Play our own show, where everyone can sing our entire album full of their own songs."
Next time we speak to Lingo presenter Jan Versteegh. What do you want to know about him?
"With whom would you form a team if you were to participate in Lingo , and why? And who would you like to play against?"
