The US actor Peter Fonda, who became famous through the cult movie Easy Rider , is dead. He died on Friday at his home in Los Angeles from the consequences of lung cancer, said the family of the actor. The son of Hollywood star Henry Fonda (1905-1982) and the younger brother of actress Jane Fonda was 79 years old.
The family mourns for the "lovable and kind" man and at the same time his "indomitable spirit and his zest for life", it said in the message.
In 1969 Peter Fonda became the idol of the hippie movement and the hero of New Hollywood as a motorcycle freak "Captain America" in the cult band Easy Rider . The film with Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson made cinema history. Together, the motorcycle rockers pull on their hot stoves in a drug rush through the United States. Fonda received an Oscar nomination as a scriptwriter.
As a director, Fonda made a name for himself with productions such as The Long Ride (1970) and the science fiction film Expedition to the Future (1973). Another Oscar nomination for Best Actor brought him the drama Ulee's Gold (1998).
