The Addams Family has won the most important prize at the Musical Awards this year. The musical was declared the best big musical at the RAI Theater in Amsterdam on Wednesday. The other nominees were Evita and Woef Side Story .
In addition to the prize for best major musical, director Paul Eenens received the award for best direction. Jon van Eerd was praised for his editing and translation of The Addams Family . This meant that production could cash in on three of the eleven nominations.
The audience award was with 53% of the votes for The Lion King . The production beat Mamma Mia! and Soldier of Orange and the show won the prize for the second time. The award was presented by the American superstar Anastasia, who later in the year will play the role of Killer Queen in We Will Rock You . The eighteenth edition of the Musical Awards was held Wednesday evening at the RAI in Amsterdam.
Grand Prize for René van Kooten and Brigitte Heitzer
The main prizes went to the protagonists of the musical Evita. René van Kooten won the prize for best actor and received the statue on the stage where he performed on Wednesday evening. His co-star Brigitte Heitzer won the prize for best actress, making Evita the big winner of the evening. Heitzer was also nominated for the same role in 2008, but seized next to the main prize.
Costume designer Yan Tax received the Oeuvre Award. "Thank you for all that beauty, you are a true artist", were the words of Pia Douwes, who contributed a creation of Tax for, among others, Elisabeth in Concert .
Prices for small musicals
Laus Steenbeke won the prize for best male lead in a small musical for his role in Woef Side Story . Jeannine La Rose won that prize for best actress for her title role in the small musical The Color Purple .
In the category of the best little musical (less than ten people with a role) the statue went to the road movie musical Selma Ann Louis . The award for upcoming talent was awarded to Jochem Smit ( You're the Top ) by Danny de Munk, who himself played the role of Ciske de Rat in his younger years.
Maas and Moors for the last time in professional jury
The professional jury of the Musical Awards consists of chairman Cornald Maas, Marisa van Eyle, Charles Droste, Irene Moors, Michiel van Erp, Joris van Bennekom and Arno Gelder. Wednesday evening it was announced that Maas and Moors had a seat on the jury for the last time.
The Addams Family was the biggest contender with eleven nominations. Selma Ann Louis and Het Pauperparadijs also each had six nominations.
