The French actor Jean-Pierre Marielle died on Wednesday at the age of 87. His family has announced this.
Marielle played in more than a hundred, mostly French-language films and played both comic and dramatic roles. One of his best-known roles was that of Jacques Saunière, the curator of the Louvre Museum, in The Da Vinci Code .
He was greatly appreciated for his role as Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe in the film Tous les Matins du Monde (1991). The actor was nominated three times for a César for best actor, the French equivalent of the Oscar.
Four times Marielle, known for his deep, low hum, was nominated for a César for the best actor in a supporting role. However, he was never allowed to actually receive the statue.
The funeral of the French actor will take place in private.
