The European Commission will present new climate targets next week. In just 16 years, the 27 member states are expected to save a large part of their emissions.

Experts disagree about how the EU's new climate goals can be achieved. The EU Commission and the Climate Advisory Council at least agree that a whole range of measures are necessary, including the expansion of EU emissions trading. In order to become climate neutral, the Brussels authority is also calculating with immature savings methods, such as underground CO2 storage. Up to 450 million tonnes of CO2 could be captured and stored annually by 2050.
