Small dogs with elongated snouts, such as miniature dachshunds, live the longest, reports a team of experts. But Labradors also do well in the ranking, while pugs live with particular health risks.

Data from 580,000 dogs were included in the analysis; around half of the dogs had already died. Overall, female dogs live, on average, 12.7 years, slightly longer than male dogs (12.4 years) The study thus supports the survival advantage of females over males in mammals.
