The El Salvador football federation has cancelled the 2022/2023 national championship. Host Alianza FC have been sanctioned for inadequate security measures.
The players' association has called on the national association to "reconsider the decision, take our opinion into account for the first time and respect our right to work" At least 12 people were killed and hundreds injured in a stampede at the stadium on Sunday. The national football federation says the step was taken "in response to the seriousness of the events"
