Activists have long accused the English Football Association of not doing enough for ex-professional footballers suffering from dementia. In 2018, the association commissioned a study – and is now presenting the first results.

Researchers suspect a link between headers and an increased risk of dementia in ex-footballers. In Sweden, too, a study showed that male footballers have about one and a half times the risk of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases as the average population. The cause is to be assumed to be headers.
