Conmebol has approved the football stadium in the Bolivian city of El Alto, located 4,083 meters above sea level. The local Always Ready team will host Peruvian Sporting Cristal in the Copa Libertadores on 20 February.

In 2007, FIFA banned international matches above 2,500 meters in order to preserve health of players. The El Alto stadium, however, is not the highest in South America. The title goes to the Daniel Alcides Carrion stadium, located at 4,378 meters in Cerro de Pasco, in central Peru.
