Raúl García Carnero (A Coruña, 1989) showed in Butarque on Saturday an exemplary ability to adapt on the pitch. The Valladolid winger, on loan from Getafe, had to advance the position to reinforce defensive intensity in the left lane. In the usual position of Toni , the left-hander covered the danger of Leganés for his band and participated in the action of 0-2, which finalized a crucial victory for Sergio González's team . The ease to get used to a new reality is not something new for him, who in the three-month hiatus also had to acclimatize. Deprived of his camera, a faithful companion since his formative years at Deportivo, Raúl forged a new passion with brushes.

"Of course I feel privileged for soccer, but if I were to be 18 years old again, I would not study INEF, but Image Sciences, because what I really like is photography," admits Raúl, in conversation with EL MUNDO. "In December, shortly before arriving in Valladolid, I was going to start a more serious course in Madrid," he explains, still convinced of completing it, although not in person.

«At the beginning I limited myself to copying those who know, so I was only aware of the frame or the light. Now what interests me is that the photo transmits something. I care about the moment, that moment that is not going to repeat itself », he analyzes. That click, however, faded to black in the second week of March.

Self-taught work

The confinement surprised Raúl in a "normal flat" in Valladolid. "Mentally it cost me a lot, because at first you take it very hard, but then the days begin to fall. All the same, one after the other », he recalls about those solo sessions on his treadmill in a room of just eight square meters.

One fine day, almost by chance, his wife bought a paint kit to entertain Marcos , just 13 months old, the joy of the house. "The three of us got on and he quickly hooked me," admits the left-hander about his beginnings, when he still didn't even know how to clean the brushes. However, after constant self-taught work, he began to distinguish oil from acrylic until he built a new language.

"It helped me disconnect"

«I transferred to the canvas my old photographs of Tanzania, Uganda or Egypt. It helped me disconnect, especially in the worst moments, "he admits about his frantic activity in front of the lectern. "I will continue painting, also in larger formats, although what I want most is to recover my Canon, which is still in Galicia," he adds, with that firm devotion of someone who knows he is different from the others.

Because after his years in First with Alavés, Leganés, Girona or Getafe, Raúl has only known two cases similar to his: Manu García and Einar Galilea , colleagues in Vitoria. «The most you learn is from the hand of the photographers themselves. It is similar to what happens with coaches, whose knowledge helps you grow, "concludes Carnero. So in the medium term, after football, Raúl does not rule out a professional outing in photography.
