The draw for the 2023 African Nations Cup for local footballers has left hosts Algeria and neighbors, defending champions Morocco, into two groups.
Algeria, which hosts the tournament for players who play in the local leagues in their countries on the continent, came in the first group, along with neighboring Libya, the champion of the third edition of 2014 in South Africa, Ethiopia and Mozambique.
On the other hand, Morocco, the champion of the last two editions 2018 at home and 2020 in Cameroon, was placed in the third group along with Sudan, the third of the second edition at home in 2011, Ghana, and runner-up for the first two editions 2009 in Ivory Coast and the third 2014 in South Africa and Madagascar.
The fifth Arab representative came Mauritania in the fourth group along with Mali, runner-up for the 2016 editions in Rwanda and 2020 in Cameroon, and Angola, and runner-up for the 2011 edition in Sudan.
The tournament, scheduled for the period between January 13 and February 4, in the cities of Algiers (two stadiums), Annaba, Constantine and Oran, will witness the participation of 18 teams distributed into five groups, three of which include four teams (first, second and third), and two groups of three teams (fourth and fifth).
The champion and runner-up of the first, second and third groups qualifies for the quarter-finals, along with the champions of the fourth and fifth groups.
It is noteworthy that Morocco and the Democratic Republic of the Congo won the championship twice, the first in 2018 at home and 2020 in Cameroon, and the second in 2009 in Ivory Coast and 2016 in Rwanda.
Tunisia won the 2011 edition in Sudan, and Libya in the 2014 edition in South Africa.
