Yang Kyung-soo, chairman of the National Federation of Trade Unions (KCTU), who is accused of leading an illegal rally in downtown Seoul, did not attend the interrogation of the suspect (warrant substantive examination) today (11th).
Chairman Yang held a press conference at the Federation of Trade Unions in Jeong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul, saying, "I am not attending the warrant substantive examination today. Because I made a decision,” he said.
The press conference was held at 10:30 a.m., the scheduled time for the substantive examination of the warrant.
Earlier, the police applied for an arrest warrant for Chairman Yang on charges of leading the National Workers' Congress held in Jongno, Seoul on the 3rd of last month by the KCTU.
Chairman Yang's decision not to appear at the warrant substantive examination is interpreted as a policy considering the possibility of being arrested by the court's issuance of a warrant.
Accordingly, the police are expected to secure new recruits for Chairman Yang.
Chairman Yang strongly criticized the government at a press conference, mentioning the parole of Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong.
He said, "The Moon Jae-in administration and the Democratic Party have betrayed the candlelight," he said.
Chairman Yang added, "From today, the Chairman's activities will be restricted, but the KCTU's general strike struggle to change the unequal world will be prepared without any setbacks."
The KCTU plans to hold a large-scale general strike in October with 1.1 million former union members participating.
