It's a big blow for Portugal in their race to Qatar.

Defeated by Serbia (1-2) in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers on Sunday night in Lisbon, the team will once again have to compete in the play-offs to qualify for the next World Cup.

For Serbia, on the other hand, this victory is synonymous with qualification in extremis and therefore a feat.

Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates therefore missed their goal: to retain first place in Group A of the qualifiers in the Europe zone to fly directly to the emirate and participate in the international tournament scheduled from November 21 to December 18, 2022. They could however settle for a draw.

The Portuguese yet in the lead from the second minute

A goal from the Portuguese signed Renato Sanches from the start (2nd) set the tone for this shock but was not enough, the Serbs gluing back on a realization of their captain Dusan Tadic (33rd) before Alexandar Mitrovic gave the advantage to the formation of the Balkans at the very end of the game (89th).

The Lusitanians, European champions in 2016, finish second in their pool with 17 points, three lengths behind their evening opponent, thrilled at the final whistle.

“We have to assume our responsibilities and especially me as a coach.

Serbia has managed to be better at many times (…) our match was not successful, we must apologize to the Portuguese, ”regretted coach Fernando Santos after the match.

Present in all major international competitions since Euro-2000, Portugal will have to wait to play the 8th World Cup in its history.
