It was an incredible evening for pole jumping in Lievin, northern France, on Wednesday evening. While Armand Duplantis was close to once again breaking the world record, a tough competition took place among the ladies on the other side of the floor.
"A little anticlimax not to manage 4.78"Several of the Doha World Cup final jumpers in September were in place, including World Cup silver medalist Sandi Morris. Angelica Bengtsson was one of two jumpers who could go over 4.63 without demolition and the 26-year-old looked to be in good jumping mood.
At 4.73, however, it was tougher for the Swede to start with two demolitions, but Bengtsson would manage in the last attempt, thus raising his season best by six centimeters. However, after two good attempts at 4.78, the Swede could see himself defeated by the strong remaining competitors.
- Today I really got the technology, I ran well and I "mashed" the stick. It was great fun to jump. A little anti-climax not to finish 4.78, where I had good trials but I can settle for 4.73, Bengtsson tells SVT Sport
Following Duplanti's world record: "Depressed myself"American Sandi Morris was alone over 4.83 but wanted even higher and requested up the bar 5.03, a height only two women managed before. While Armand Duplantis was attempting a world record on the other side of the track, Morris had fine attempts at 5.03, but never got any perfect hope and thus stayed at 4.83.
For Angelica Bengtsson, it has been difficult to see compatriot "Mondo" Duplantis and competitor Sandi Morris achieve such great success when things went a little slower for her own part.
- We have Sandi who has tried on world record and "Mondo" who beat his own world record. I have a little feeling that I want to be there too and have been depressing myself quite a bit. But now the last few days I have used it instead as inspiration and I think I got it today, says Bengtsson.
For Angelica Bengtsson, the closest team is waiting for the home ground in Växjö which starts this weekend.
- I have many nice competitions ahead of me. It will be a lot of fun to compete at home in the Swedish Championships and then Michaela (Meijer eds. Note) is also with whom you can be tamped a bit, ”concludes Angelica Bengtsson.
