On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz, one of the concentration camps built by the Nazis to "finally solve the Jewish question." Among the survivors was Menachem Aberman. He was in the death camp since 1944 with his mother, sister and five brothers, none of his family survived. According to Aberman, he was sent to Auschwitz for various jobs, including removing ash from the cells where prisoners were burned.
