On April 9, 1945, the assault by the Soviet troops of Konigsberg ended, a year later becoming Kaliningrad. The garrison of one of the most powerful Hitler's fortresses capitulated after four days of fighting. This allowed the forces of the 3rd Belorussian Front to begin the final elimination of the East Prussian enemy group and deprive the Nazi command of the hope of prolonging hostilities in Europe. Historians note the high level of training of the Koenigsberg operation by the Soviet command, which made it possible to take the fortress with minimal losses. “In the battles for Königsberg, Soviet soldiers again showed amazing resilience, fearlessness, mass heroism,” wrote the commander of the 3rd Belorussian Front, Marshal Alexander Vasilevsky, in his memoirs.
