The'Jeju Black Cow', which was taken away during the Japanese colonial rule due to Japanese exploitation and the Korean people's extermination policy, regained its status after 82 years.

Jeju black cattle were treated so precious that they were regarded as true goods in the real world during the Goryeo Dynasty and Joseon Dynasty, and as scented products during major ceremonies in the country.

However, in 1938, when Japan enacted the rules for unification of the color of Korean cattle as follows, it lost its unique status and was excluded from Korean cattle.

"Japanese cattle are black, and Korean cattle are reddish brown (yellow) as standard."

In 1980, due to the meat-oriented cattle industry policy, Jeju black cattle, which are small and have little meat, were at risk of culling.

The meat grade is determined by the backfat thickness, the size of the sirloin area, and the carcass weight.

Then, in 2004, it was officially registered as a breed of Korean beef by the International Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and it was finally maintained, and in 2013, it was designated as Natural Monument No. 546.

However, until recently, it was still differentiated from general Korean beef in the distribution and consumption stage, so it was not marked separately and was labeled as'Korean beef' or'Beef beef'.

After 80 years of sadness, Jeju black cattle finally got their name back. Park Se-pil, the head of the Jeju Black Beef Research Center at Jeju National University, held a press conference on the 28th and said, "We have

analyzed the Jeju black cattle gene and meat quality, and through cooperation with related organizations, we have been able to label black cattle varieties at the stage of consumption and distribution

.

Currently, the Livestock Products Quality Assessment Service has been required to mark'Jeju Black Beef' in the'Small Carcass Equivalence Determination Result' since last September, and producers and distributors can also search Jeju Black Beef information through the computerized transaction certification portal. .

Professor Park expected that "consumer confidence in Jeju black cattle will increase and consumption will be promoted, which will be an important opportunity for the vitalization of the Jeju black cattle industry."
