June 29, 1972 Samantha Smith was born. The girl became known to the whole world after she wrote a letter to the General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Yuri Andropov. She asked the Soviet leader if he planned to start a war against the United States. The General Secretary invited Samantha to the USSR - to personally make sure that the Soviet Union does not wish harm to the rest of the world. The eleven-year-old girl visited Moscow, Leningrad and the Artek pioneer camp. She talked not only with her peers, but also with famous people - for example, with the first woman cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova. Great hopes were pinned on Samantha in the matter of detente of international tension. However, the girl's life was tragically cut short in a plane crash. She was only 13 years old.
