Former England captain Wayne Rooney is ending his playing career to become full-time Derby County coach, the England D2 club said in a statement on Friday.

Aged 35, the ex-Manchester United striker signed a two-and-a-half-year contract until the summer of 2023. Since the dismissal of Dutch coach Phillip Cocu in November 2020, he was already in the role as an interim coach, while continuing his playing career.

Author of 253 goals in 13 years at Manchester United, the club of his life, Rooney, the best English player of the 2010s, will forever remain - without a doubt - the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Premier League.

An unforgettable firecracker under the helm of David Seaman, in October 2002, at 16 years and 360 days.

"Wayne Rooney, remember that name" will exclaim the commentator of the time, under the spell.

He was not wrong.
