The eccentric billionaire never stops playing with the stock market.

Elon Musk, the boss of Tesla, added this Friday the mention "#bitcoin" accompanied by the logo of the virtual currency on the bio of his Twitter account, followed by more than 44 million people.

It did not take more for the price of bitcoin to soar, allowing the cryptocurrency to exceed the $ 37,000 mark.

The currency's price took off 17% in 24 hours.

This Friday at the end of the morning, the bitcoin was thus exchanged at 36,861 dollars, according to the sites specialized in the virtual currencies.

The billionaire marked #Bitcoin followed by his emoji, and the price of the cryptocurrency saw a surge of 17%.

A very volatile currency

The boss of Tesla himself commented on this surge in the price of bitcoin, indicating that "in retrospect, it was inevitable".

Bitcoin, a very volatile currency, broke a record at the start of 2021. It has practically passed the $ 40,000 mark in recent weeks, before falling back and stabilizing at around $ 30,000.

In recent months, it has benefited from the growing enthusiasm of large multinationals, in particular the payment service Paypal, which has been accepting cryptocurrency exchanges since the end of 2020.

This is not the first time that the billionaire's tweets have had such an impact on stock prices.

Earlier this week, his tweet mentioning e-commerce company Etsy had seen the stock gain 18% in a single day.

In early January, after Facebook announced a change in WhatsApp's general terms of use, Elon Musk also invited his followers to use the Signal encrypted messaging app.

The effects were not long in coming: Signal quickly ranked first among the most downloaded apps on the AppStore and GooglePlay.

Another side effect, the price of Signal Advance, a Texan healthcare company - which is not a messaging system - had taken more than 6,000% between January 6 and 11.
