In the afternoon of today (5th), an animal rights activist dressed as a monkey and performed a performance of throwing away coconuts in front of the Thai Embassy in Yongsan-gu, Seoul.
They are supporters of the US animal rights group Peta, and they have planned this performance to convey the message that Thai monkeys are being exploited for their coconut-picking labor.
In July of last year, Peta infiltrated a Thai coconut plantation to inform the world of the reality of monkey labor exploitation.
Monkeys are said to pick an average of 1,000 coconuts a day after training to harvest coconuts for 3 to 5 months.
People can only pick about 80 per day, so they call monkeys a'coconut machine'. When they aren't harvesting coconuts, they're trapped in narrow cages or tied to a leash.
As controversy over abuse arose, supermarket chains in the U.S. and the U.K. announced that they would stop selling coconut milk made from coconuts picked by monkeys. Netizens said, "It is shocking that the coconut milk I was eating is the result of abuse." Will this peacefully coexisting world come...?"
