IKEA opened its largest store in the world in the Philippine capital Manila on Thursday.

The branch in the Mall of Asia shopping center covers an area of approximately 65,000 square meters.

That is comparable to about ten football fields.

It is the Swedish chain's first store in the Philippines.

The company announced the arrival of the branch in 2018 and it should have been ready last year.

But the corona pandemic threw a spanner in the works.

In addition, delays were caused by problems in the delivery of building materials.

The Mall of Asia is one of the largest shopping centers in the world.

The complex is located near an area with several large casinos.

IKEA will have to comply with the local corona measures in its new store.

This means, among other things, that customers must reserve a time slot to come shopping.

Many Philippines have already done so, so the store will be full for the next two weeks.

IKEA is investing heavily in expansion.

The Swedish furniture group is not only looking at growth in Asia.

In the spring, the first South American store will open in the Chilean capital Santiago.

The company currently has more than 460 branches worldwide.

The intention is that in the current financial year, which will run until the summer of next year, nearly sixty more branches will be added.
