The Minister of Economic Affairs was allowed to approve the extraction of 8.1 billion cubic meters of gas in the Groningen field in the period 2020-2021.

The Council of State ruled on Wednesday that the minister made the right decision and that measures have been taken to phase out extraction as quickly as possible.

For example, it is expected that no more gas will be needed from the Groningen field by 2022.

The case about gas extraction was brought by the Groninger Soil Movement and residents of the province of Groningen.

They wanted no more gas to be extracted in 2020 and 2021.

However, the Council of State believes that the minister has made the right decision.

He has taken into account the customers of the gas, who cannot do without the gas in the winter to heat their homes.

At the same time, the minister took the safety of the people of Groningen into account.

According to the advisory board, they have an interest in a quick settlement of the earthquake damage, a recovery of their sense of safety and the removal of frustrations.

According to the Council of State, something still needs to be done to meet the safety standards. For example, many houses have to be reinforced, because these houses have been damaged by the earthquakes caused by gas extraction. That should go faster than it is now. But due to the accelerated phasing out of gas extraction, according to the Council of State, it was not necessary to stop gas extraction.
