The Dutch automaker VDL Nedcar has received an important order that ensures the future of the company in the short term.

The company will build electric cars for the American company Canoo until at least 2028.

The company could not confirm whether this affects employment at VDL Nedcar.

Initially, the Dutch company will build 1,000 cars in the fourth quarter of 2022 and another 15,000 will be built in 2023.

The current production of BMW Minis and X1 models in Born, which ends in 2023 anyway, continues in the meantime.

At the same time, VDL Nedcar is also holding talks with other automakers about a possible collaboration, but the company does not go into detail about this.

The partnership with Canoo is good news for the car manufacturer, because last year the company had to lay off 750 employees because BMW had reduced its production.

A spokesperson cannot yet say whether this assignment will create new jobs.

"First we have to see how the collaboration goes," it sounds.

VDL Nedcar is part of the international industrial giant VDL Groep, which achieved a turnover of approximately 4.7 billion euros in 2020. VDL Nedcar assembles cars in Born for other clients.
