Douglas will close approximately 500 of its 2,400 European stores, the German perfume chain announced Thursday.
It is not yet clear whether it also concerns branches in the Netherlands.
Douglas attributes the store closures mainly to the corona crisis, which has caused people to shop even more online.
Stores in Southern Europe in particular will close, but some sixty of the approximately 430 stores in Germany will no longer open.
According to the chain, the stores in the southern European countries are very hard hit by the corona crisis. As a result of previous acquisitions, there is also too much overlap in where the stores are located in those countries, says the parent company.
