Amazon has purchased eighteen hundred electric vans from the German car brand Mercedes-Benz for its European fleet, Jeff Bezos's company said on Friday. The electric vans should contribute to Amazon's goal of being climate neutral by 2040.

A majority of electric vehicles will be put into service this year, the company writes. These are twelve hundred large eSprinter models from Mercedes-Benz and six hundred medium-sized variants of the eVito model.

The vast majority of the vans are intended for the German market: eight hundred vans will reach our eastern neighbors. Five hundred pieces are intended for British roads. It is not known how many are destined for the Dutch market.

Amazon CEO Bezos says he is pleased that Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, is part of "the drive to build the most sustainable transport fleet in the world".

Amazon's purchase so far is the largest for Mercedes-Benz's electric arm, but pales in comparison to Amazon's investment in the start-up Rivian Automotive. The giga company wants to have 100,000 Rivian vans in use by 2024.
