The price of a pack of cigarettes was increased by 1 euro on Wednesday. The extra excise tax increase, agreed in the National Prevention Agreement, follows the increase of 14 euro cents earlier this year and also applies to other tobacco products.
A new increase of another 12 euro cents is planned for 1 January 2021, after which the price of a pack of cigarettes in 2023 should amount to 10 euros. In this way, the government wants to further discourage smoking and achieve a "smoke-free generation" in 2040.
According to the Trimbos Institute, the number of smokers in the Netherlands is steadily decreasing. In 2019, about 20 percent of the population smoked. In 2014 this was still more than a quarter.
