Despite increasing demand, Vorwerk intends to discontinue the production of the Thermomix food processor in Wuppertal as planned at the end of the year. From the new year, more than 1,300 euro expensive kitchen appliances would be produced only in France and China, said a company spokesman. Essential components of the device - such as the motor or the blender - but would continue to be manufactured in Germany.
Announced, the company had already responded to the closure of German production in the summer, thus responding to significant sales declines. Back then, Vorwerk had announced a consolidation program aimed at reducing 200 out of 2,500 jobs in production and administration in Wuppertal. This had happened in the meantime.
Meanwhile, the demand for the devices has risen again internationally, as the spokesman said. In Germany too, growth is in double digits this year. However, this does not change the plans for the cessation of production in Germany.
The main site for Thermomix production is France anyway. There, the devices are traditionally also produced for the German market. At the Vorwerk headquarters in Wuppertal, according to the company, smaller quantities were produced for individual markets with different voltages or different plug shapes.
German production was set up in 2015 at the height of the Thermomix hype to relieve the main plant in France and shorten the then long waiting times for customers.
