The wealth of billionaires decreased by 4.3 percent ($ 388 billion) in 2018. Between 2013 and 2018 the money mountain of the richest people had grown by 34.5 percent to 8.5 trillion dollars. This is evident from the Billionaires Insights report by bank UBS and accountancy firm PWC.
Especially in the United States, more billionaires were added who performed well thanks to the flourishing tech sector. The country has 607 billionaires.
The billionaires in China (including Hong Kong) were hit hard by the country's slowed economic growth, ongoing protests and disappointing stock market results. Yet a new billionaire is being added every 2 to 2.5 days in China.
There are 10 billionaires in the Netherlands, compared to 114 in Germany and 54 in the United Kingdom. The survey looked at 2,101 billionaires in 43 countries, according to the report itself, it covers 98 percent of the billionaires market.
More and more female billionaires
Between 2013 and 2018 the number of female billionaires increased by almost half, from 160 to 230. The number of male billionaires increased by 39 percent.
Earlier this year, Oxfam calculated that the 26 richest people in the world have just as much possession as the poorest 50 percent of the world's population. That's 3.8 billion people.
