The Netherlands has been placed in the top 10 countries by travel organization Lonely Planet that tourists should visit in 2020. According to the organization, there are six countries worldwide that are even more beautiful. South Asian Bhutan is at the top of the list, closely followed by England and Northern Macedonia.

The historic Buddhist temples and vast natural areas are said to have given Bhutan the go-ahead this year. In England, major cities such as London are not highlighted, but tourists are well advised to visit the many coastal towns.

The Netherlands owes its seventh place to the "excellent" train network, while the "beautiful nature reserves" and "bustling Amsterdam" are put away as tourist attractions.

Top 10 countries to visit in 2020

  • 1. Bhutan
  • 2. England
  • 3. Northern Macedonia
  • 4. Aruba
  • 5. Swatini
  • 6. Costa Rica
  • 7. The Netherlands
  • 8. Liberia
  • 9. Morocco
  • 10. Uruguay

Eurovision Song Contest contributes to high ranking in the Netherlands

The jury also counted the dragging in of the Eurovision Song Contest. The travel organization calls April and May the best times for a visit to the Netherlands, because in addition to King's Day and Liberation Day - the Netherlands celebrates in 2020 that it was liberated 75 years ago - the singing event also takes place.

The entire top 10 of last year cannot be found in the renewed list. Then, just like in 2013, Sri Lanka was still referred to as the country to visit. As far as we know it is the first time that the Netherlands has invaded the list.
