Congressman Francisco Sagasti was elected head of the Peruvian Congress. This gives him the right to become interim president of the country after the recently sworn head of state Manuel Merino announced his resignation amid the political crisis.

Earlier, the Congress of Peru removed from office the President of the country in connection with allegations of corruption.
Later, protests broke out in the Peruvian capital Lima.
