The theme of the day: 219a - the reform and the consequences

The reform of the so-called advertising ban on abortions is one of the most sensitive bills of the Grand Coalition. The negotiations on the controversial paragraph 219a dragged on for over a year. The SPD wanted to abolish the law, the CDU stood across. The issue threatened to disassemble the government. At the end there was a compromise, which is to be decided this evening in the Bundestag.

This states: The advertising ban remains, but is supplemented. In the future, pregnant women should be able to find out more about the possibilities of abortion. Doctors and clinics may now announce that they are aborting, but have to refer to authorities, counseling centers and medical associations for further information. So far, they could be convicted if they called on their website abortions as a benefit.

Not satisfactory to all, but at least a step forward, my colleague Milena Hassenkamp recently commented when the coalition draft became known. She also looked at how strong the influence of the self-proclaimed life-guards movement is on the CDU - and what kind of pressure it exerts. Click here for the article.

Abortion opponents are also gaining a louder voice in Germany. With which arguments do you promote your concern and what lies behind it? Here is the fact check of my colleague Irene Berres.

In the future, British tourists may have to pay so much for a visa if they want to travel to the EU after Brexit - if it does come at all. Actually, the EU states wanted to continue after the departure of Britain allow the visa-free entry. But there are some obstacles.
