Mustafa (right) will form the new government, succeeding Muhammad Shtayyeh (Anatolia)

The US State Department welcomed the nomination of a new government for the Palestinian Authority, and said it looked forward to working with it to promote peace, security, and prosperity.

The ministry added in a statement that Washington will engage with the new Palestinian government to achieve credible reforms. It also indicated that revitalizing the Palestinian Authority is necessary to achieve results for the Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and create conditions for stability in the region.

Earlier this March, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas assigned the head of the Palestine Investment Fund (the sovereign fund), Muhammad Mustafa, to form a new government to succeed Muhammad Shtayyeh, who submitted his resignation last February.

It is noteworthy that the Prime Minister-designate is not a member of the Fatah movement led by Abbas, but he is an “independent” member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and has held a number of positions in previous governments, in addition to heading the Palestine Investment Fund, one of the PLO institutions since 2015.

This comes in the wake of a devastating war in Gaza since October 7, which left 32,623 martyrs and 75,92 injured - most of them children and women - in addition to massive destruction of infrastructure, and was accompanied by an Israeli escalation in the West Bank despite the start of the month of Ramadan and the appearance of Tel Aviv. Before the International Court of Justice on charges of "genocide".
