The Provincial Heritage Commission of the Government of Andalusia has authorized the restoration project of the roof of nave 8 of the

Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba

due to its state of deterioration.

The intervention, as reported this Friday by the Andalusian Government, affects the

section between the façade that faces the Patio de los Naranjos and the skylight, located about 15 meters to the south

. It is a gabled roof, with a third gable where it meets the patio façade.

Both the decking and the wooden trusses are "in poor condition due to

water leaks, with damage due to rot and attack by xylophages

." Only the wooden beams replaced 40 years ago at the junction with the Patio de los Naranjos are "in apparent good condition."

The project proposes the restoration of the roof, maintaining its layout and slopes, with

the replacement of wooden trusses of a similar design

to the existing ones.

After dismantling the tile, the board and the existing structure, the finishing of the walls will be cleaned, placing a sheet of lead to support the new pine wood trusses, treated in an autoclave.

In its report, the Heritage Commission indicates that

the distribution and number of existing armor, as well as its squads, must be maintained

. During the works, the condition of each reinforcement will be analyzed, reinforcing or replacing the necessary elements, under the principle of

minimal intervention

.

Likewise, a preventive archaeological activity will be carried out to analyze emerging structures and control the restoration works and the start of the works will be communicated.

The current layout of the roof is due to a

reform in the 18th century

, when the original coffered ceilings were replaced by half-barrel chambered vaults with skylights, which forced the elevation of the roof system, increasing the support walls with brick.
