Yesterday, the European Union affirmed its commitment to providing all necessary to ensure the success of the Palestinian general elections, which are scheduled to take place starting next May.

The spokesman for the European Union office in Jerusalem, Shadi Othman, told the official Palestinian Radio that the union had pledged to the Palestinian Central Elections Committee to provide it with everything necessary for the elections to succeed in full transparency.

Othman said that the Central Elections Committee's meeting with the European Union yesterday comes as a continuation of the continuous contacts between the two sides, and to emphasize the role of the Union in support of the Palestinian cause, in addition to providing its political support for holding the elections.

He stated that during the meeting, a discussion was held about what could be presented in the next stage, especially the provision of international observers and many issues regarding intervention with Israel, to facilitate easy access to the areas of East Jerusalem and the areas classified (C) in the West Bank.

He pointed out that there are agreements that define the manner and mechanism of conducting these elections with the participation of all parties, and to enable Palestinian citizens to fulfill their role in all Palestinian areas.

Othman stressed that during the coming period, there will be a continuation of all political contacts with all relevant parties, to work for the success of the Palestinian electoral process.

Yesterday, the Palestinian Central Elections Committee announced that it had held a meeting in Ramallah with the representative of the European Union, Sven Kohn von Burgsdorf.

According to a statement, the head of the committee, Hanna Nasir, briefed the European official on the latest developments in the general election file, after President Mahmoud Abbas issued the decrees that set election dates.

He also reviewed the arrangements made by the committee, during the current and future periods, as part of preparing for the elections, foremost of which is voter registration as the first stage of the electoral process.
