Kiel (dpa / lno) - Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) justified the planned extension of the corona lockdown to February 14 with the continued high level of infection.

"All measures will be continued and we will sharpen some areas," said Günther on Tuesday evening after a conference of the state heads of government with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).

In the north, the number of new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants will not be able to be reduced to 50 within a week by the end of January.

This value is currently just under 90.

Virus variants cause concern.

"There is no reason to panic about it, but you have to be a little careful," said Günther.

The mask requirement is tightened.

In the future, so-called surgical masks or mouth-nose covers of the KN95 / N95 or FFP2 standards will have to be worn in public transport and in shops.

"That is a reasonable tightening," said Günther.

Günther was happy that a perspective plan for openings in the event of certain infection events should be drawn up by the next Prime Minister's Conference.

"That is good and necessary message."

He had insisted on that in advance.
