Hamburg (dpa / lno) - In order to contain the corona pandemic, fewer children should attend daycare centers and schools in Hamburg at least until mid-February.

"We have to work to ensure that more children stay at home," said Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) on Tuesday evening after discussions between the state heads of government and the Chancellor, during which it was decided to extend the lockdown until February 14.

This was necessary "because the number of infections is still too high and because additional risks from virus mutations are to be feared."

The Senate will discuss how the number of children in schools and daycare centers can be reduced on Wednesday.

But it is also clear that there are situations in life in which working parents have to have their children looked after, said the mayor.

"It should be limited to those cases that depend on it."

So far, the daycare centers in Hamburg have been open to all children in so-called restricted regular operations.

The parents were only appealed to, whenever possible, to look after their children at home.

From his point of view, the most important decision by the federal and state governments is to work from home, "because we can only achieve better corona protection by limiting professional mobility," said Tschentscher.

"That is why the activities that allow it must also be done in the home office."

Should a presence in the company be unavoidable, protective masks would have to be provided for the employees.
