Jakarta (dpa) - Three days after the earthquake on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, the number of victims rose by eight to 81.

This was announced by the national civil protection authority.

The magnitude 6.2 quake on Friday claimed 70 lives in the island's capital Mamuju alone.

The number of injuries was given as more than 740.

Almost 28,000 people are in emergency shelters.

Some of them would get corona tests.

This is to ensure that none of the people displaced from their accommodation is infected with the corona virus.

The quake shook the island early in the morning on Friday.

The disaster area is in the West Sulawesi region.

Among other things, two hospitals, a hotel and part of the local administration building in Mamuju collapsed.

Sulawesi lies between Borneo and New Guinea.

Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

In the southern part of the archipelago, the Indo-Australian plate pushes under the Eurasian plate, causing frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in the region.
