New York (AP) - The US record producer and convicted murderer Phil Spector is dead. Spector, who had been in a prison in California since 2009, died on Saturday in a hospital in the state, as the competent authority announced on Sunday.

Spector lived to be 81 years old, according to consistent media reports.

Spector has worked with music greats like The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Tina Turner and The Ronettes.

He became world famous for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson, for which he was sentenced to 19 years in prison in 2009.

40-year-old actress Lana Clarkson was shot in the mouth in Spector's mansion in February 2003.

The first trial against Spector with more than 70 testimony failed in September 2007 because the jury could not agree on a unanimous verdict.

In a second trial, twelve other jurors, including a self-declared Spector fan, found him guilty.

Spector owed his wealth and fame to his "Wall of Sound" recording technique, which he had developed in the 1960s for hits such as "Be My Baby" and "Chapel Of Love".

In 1989 he was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame for his musical achievements.
