The number of new recruits in the Bundeswehr dropped drastically in the Corona year 2020.
While 20,070 men and women could be won for the troops in 2019, the figure was only 16,442 in 2020, a decrease of 18 percent.
That was the result of the Federal Government's answer to a written question from left-wing politician Norbert Müller, which WELT AM SONNTAG had received in advance.
Accordingly, the number of underage recruits has also fallen sharply.
Whereas in the previous year it was 1706, in 2020 only 1,148 young people started their service before their 18th birthday.
The proportion of minors among the new recruits thus fell from 8.5 to seven percent.
Müller assumes that the decline is due to the Corona crisis: “The figures show how important schools and youth fairs are as recruiting terrain.

He assessed the decreasing proportion of underage recruits as a “good sign”.
“The big goal, however, must still be: Never under 18.” This is what the former defense commissioner Hans-Peter Bartels (SPD) recently pointed out in his military report.
