Berlin (dpa) - In view of the pandemic, the Berlin stages are expected to be closed until Easter.

Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer (left) said on Thursday that he had conferred with representatives of the state's theaters and the independent scene.

“We actually pretty much agreed yesterday that no stage would open here in Berlin until Easter.

You don't need a lot of imagination, »said Lederer in the House of Representatives.

Nationwide theaters, opera and concert halls, but also many other facilities have been closed again since November.

The restrictions are initially limited to the end of January.

A longer break is planned at some theaters.

Several houses in Hesse should only play again from Easter, i.e. from the beginning of April.

The state theaters in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, for example, will also remain closed until at least the end of March.

Berlin's Senator for Culture Lederer referred to the high number of infections.

It was not clear until the middle of next week what effects the holidays would have had on the infection process.

The second, “far more dramatic” question is about the effects of the spreading virus mutation, said Lederer.

If this variant has a significantly higher infection intensity, all previous considerations with regard to the culture would have to be put to the test.

“Right now is not the time to talk seriously about what we're doing now,” said Lederer.

“Then when something works again, culture has to be part of it.

But at the moment nobody can seriously give any serious information about when something will work again. "

Like other theaters, the Berlin theaters have been pushing major premieres for months.

The Kudammbühnen, for example, are planning a production of “Murder on the Orient Express”, directed by Katharina Thalbach.

The other samples have been pushed for now.

A new date for the premiere has not yet been set.

"We hope that it will be ready in May," said theater director Martin Woelffer.

There was consensus in the switch with Lederer.

"We said:" That sounds sensible, "said Woelffer.

Of course it is terrible and artistically frustrating.

Above all financially, they still need support.

Aid funds have been promised, but there are still questions about the payment of the so-called November aid.

Theaters currently have no income.

"We can't make a takeaway."

The Berliner Ensemble is working on a new production of the famous "Threepenny Opera".

The production should be rehearsed to the end of January under increased security measures, as a theater spokesman said on Thursday.

For example, employees are regularly tested for the corona virus.

The premiere was actually planned for the end of January - a new date is still pending.

The spokesman said there would be no more games until Easter.
