On Wednesday, the US Congress would hold a long meeting that would end with Joe Biden being officially elected president - then everything degenerated.

First, tens of thousands of Trump supporters gathered in the streets, then a number of protesters managed to enter the congress buildings.

Prime Minister Stefan Löfven takes what is happening seriously:

"It is with great concern that I follow the developments in Washington DC.

What we are seeing now is an attack on democracy.

President Trump and many members of Congress have a great responsibility for what is happening now.

The democratic process of electing a president must be respected.

The United States is a strong democracy and I hope that there will be a peaceful restoration of order ", he writes in a comment to SVT News.

"Contempt is destructive"

The chaos has also caused several world leaders to react:

"Shocking scenes in Washington DC The outcome of this democratic election must be respected," tweeted Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO and former Prime Minister of Norway.

On Twitter, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas also sharply criticized the protesters:

"The enemies of democracy will rejoice to see these incredible images from Washington DC. Rebellious words turn into violent acts," he wrote, continuing:

"Contempt for democratic institutions is destructive.

"Trump and his supporters should finally accept the decisions of American voters and stop trampling on democracy."

Politicians and leaders around the world are appalled by the scenes in Washington DC.

"Incredible and terrible"

Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of neighboring Canada, told News 1130 Vancouver radio station that he was worried about the situation.

- We follow what happens minute by minute.

I believe that the democratic institutions are strong and hopefully everything will return to normal soon.

Even in Sweden, the violent demonstrations arouse emotions:

"Unbelievable and terrible that the Capitol is stormed after the instigation of Trump.

To prevent the establishment of a democratic election result.

Liberal democracy must be defended.

In the USA and in Sweden.

Those responsible for this attack on democracy must be prosecuted ", tweets the Center Party's party leader Annie Lööf.
