Curfew in Washington amid intensified security reinforcements in the vicinity of Congress

The Mayor of Washington announced, on Wednesday evening, a curfew starting at 6 pm Washington time, after pro-Trump crowds stormed the Congress building.

The decision comes after supporters of Trump stormed Congress, coinciding with a joint session of the House and Senate to approve the results of the presidential elections.

Trump supporters stormed the police barricades around the Congress building, went up to the main square, waved pro-president flags and chanted slogans rejecting the results of the November presidential election.

Some of them also managed to enter the building.

Reuters reported that Congressional police have told House members to take gas masks from under their seats and be ready to put them on.

And she continued, "The personnel of the building penetrated while they were in the round hall area."

Videos showed US police firing tear gas to prevent more Trump supporters from storming the building.

Media reports also reported that US Vice President Mike Pence had been evacuated from Congress after the demonstrators entered it.

Pence was presiding over the "symbolic" validation session.

This development comes about an hour after Trump called on his supporters to "not surrender and refuse to admit defeat."

The outgoing US President, during a demonstration by his supporters in Washington to reject the results of the presidential elections, called on his supporters to march towards Congress.
