About 100 people were arrested after the factory was looted in South India, but "the situation is back under control", according to local police, and no injuries are reported.

The deputy governor of the state of Karnataka, C. Ashwathnarayan, called the looting of the factory "free violence" and assured that his government will shed full light "without delay" on the episode: "We will ensure that workers' rights are respected and that the wages due are paid ", he added.

A local union leader, on the other hand, denounced the "brutal exploitation" to which the workers of the electronic components factory were subjected.

"The state government allowed Wistron to disregard the fundamental rights of workers," the trade unionist told The Hindu newspaper.

The Wistron Group - a former production arm of Acer Inc. spun off in 2000 with over 80,000 employees worldwide - did not comment on the incident.
