The number of people admitted to hospital is a clear measure of the spread of infection in society - and in the last four weeks there has been a sharp increase.

Soon there may be as many hospitalized as when it was at its worst this spring.

700 fewer than last spring

According to the Swedish Public Health Agency's latest update from Monday, 1,627 people are now being cared for in hospitals for covid-19.

When it was at its worst in April what it was around 2,300 people.

The curve for those in intensive care has also increased sharply in the past month.

Right now, 176 people are receiving intensive care.

However, it is still a smaller number compared to last spring.

Positive in some regions

In Stockholm, which had the worst of the spring, there are now just over 600 with covid-19 in hospital.

In April, the corresponding figure was 1,100. However, these figures may be slightly below due to delays in reporting.

The number of covid patients is increasing in many regions of the country, but in other regions the infection seems to have stopped or reversed.

This applies, for example, in Jönköping and in Örebro.

In Uppsala, which has had tougher local restrictions for just over a month, the region estimates that the infection has leveled off - thanks to people following the advice.

"Worried about Christmas"

But the pressure on the Academic Hospital is still high.

At the infection clinic, there are now basically only covid patients.

- I feel very worried and I feel worried before Christmas and the Christmas shopping, about how it will affect us here, says Kajsa Lutti, nurse at the University Hospital.
