Joe Biden names Anthony Blinken as Secretary of State in his next government

US President-elect Joe Biden announced, on Monday, a series of appointments in his next government, including the designation of Anthony Blinken as Secretary of State.

John Kerry will take charge of the climate file, and Alejandro Mayorcas will be appointed as homeland security minister and Linda Thomas Greenfield will be ambassador to the United Nations.

In this context, former Secretary of State John Kerry (76 years), if approved by the Senate, will be the US president's special envoy for climate affairs, which reflects the importance Biden attaches to this file.

It is noteworthy that Blinken, 58, was Assistant Secretary of State between 2015 and 2017 and will succeed Republican Mike Pompeo at the head of this key ministry.

At the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Biden named for the first time the Spanish-born Alejandro Mayorcas, 60, born in Havana, who will especially oversee immigration issues.

"I need a ready team from day one," Biden said in a statement announcing these appointments, noting that outgoing President Donald Trump still refused to acknowledge his defeat in the November 3 presidential election.

The president-elect added that "these individuals have experienced and tested crises as much as they are creative and creative."

Also, Biden chose Avril Haynes (51 years) to take over the National Intelligence Department, which coordinates the various federal agencies active in this field, noting that she is the first woman to assume this responsibility.

African American Linda Thomas Greenfield (68 years), who held the position of Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, will be ambassador to the United Nations.

Biden has also named a close advisor, Jake Sullivan, 43, to be his national security advisor.
