Dubai Health: Influenza was the most infectious disease in the past year

Dubai Health confirmed the emergence of infectious diseases once or twice during the past year.

The Dubai Health Authority revealed that the total number of people infected with infectious diseases, last year, reached 38,981 patients, adding that the "seasonal influenza" of all kinds tops the list of the most common diseases.

According to the annual statistical report issued recently, the percentage of males infected with this type of disease reached 58.9%, compared to 41.1% for females.

The most infectious diseases among the population were among the age group of less than 14 years, while the rate decreased among the age group of more than 45 years.

The authority pointed out that the most common communicable disease, during the past year, was the "seasonal influenza" of all kinds, accounting for 65.8% of the infections, followed by "smallpox" by 7.2%, then the "invasive pneumococcal disease" by 5.3%.

And it confirmed the presence of infectious diseases that appeared once or twice during the past year, such as "Crimean hemorrhagic fever", "viral hepatitis", and "botulism - chancroid".

The authority revealed that the number of surgeries in Dubai reached 201 thousand and 966 operations, of which 79 thousand and 585 were major surgeries, by 39.9%, compared to 122 thousand and 381 minor surgeries, or 60.1%.

Emergency surgeries amounted to 25.4%, indicating that the largest percentage of surgeries were performed in private sector establishments, at 78%, compared to 18.9% in Dubai Health facilities.

The authority stated that general surgery operations topped the list of operations by 22.4%, followed by obstetrics and gynecology, with 13.1%, and injuries and orthopedics 10.4%.
