November 09, 2020Donald Trump has fired Defense Secretary Mark Esper.

The US president announced it on Twitter, to which he also entrusted the announcement of his successor, namely that Christopher Miller, the current director of American counterterrorism, will lead the Pentagon.

His office, the outgoing president emphasizes, is immediate.

"I am happy to announce that Christopher C. Miller, the highly respected director of the National Counterterrorism Center (confirmed in the Senate unanimously) will be Acting Secretary of Defense, effective immediately. Chris will do a GREAT job. Mark Esper has finished. . I want to thank him for his service, "Trump wrote on Twitter.

For some days Esper had been hanging in the balance.

The NBC reported that it was preparing the resignation letter.

The Washington Post had anticipated a "purge" of collaborators Trump deemed unloyal.

Among the names mentioned were Esper and the director of the CIA, Gina Haspel.

Esper was also collaborating with Congress to remove the names of Confederate generals from American military bases, an initiative that Trump did not like.
